Ground Anchors – Even After a Thousand Tests, They Can Still Surprise Us

How many anchors have we tested at DMT?

Honestly… we stopped counting after the first thousand. 😉
That probably gives us the right to say we have gathered a fair amount of experience in this field.

Over the years, we have tested ground anchors across many European countries – from Scandinavia to Central Europe. Each project meant different standards, different client expectations and different soil conditions.

And yet, one thing remains the same:
anchors can still surprise us.

The Geotechnical Alphabet of Anchors

Our projects have taken us to sites in
Denmark, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Along the way, we encountered a wide range of anchor systems, including:

multi-bulb anchors

underwater anchors

anchors after more than 50 years of service

anchors used in diaphragm walls, sheet piles and pile walls

What does anchor testing actually involve?

Testing ground anchors is much more than simply applying load to a structural element.

In practice, it may involve:

  • installing load cells and monitoring systems

  • verifying prestressing forces

  • measuring displacements during load tests

  • analysing anchor behaviour throughout the testing process

And occasionally… an anchor might even be pulled out of the wall.
Of course only when it is a temporary anchor and part of the testing procedure😇

Why proper anchor testing matters

Ground anchors play a critical role in many geotechnical structures.
Their performance directly affects the stability of structures such as:

  • diaphragm walls

  • retaining structures

  • excavation support systems

  • hydraulic and infrastructure structures

Anchor testing allows engineers to:

✔️ verify design assumptions
✔️ confirm anchor load capacity
✔️ ensure structural safety
✔️ reduce project risk during construction and operation.

Conclusions

After thousands of tests, one thing is certain:
ground anchors are one of those geotechnical elements that require both solid engineering knowledge and extensive field experience.

We may never test every anchor in the world.

But we do know one thing:

every anchor should be tested properly💪
