Dynamic load tests

PDA measurement (Pile Driving Analysis) is a method for dynamic load testing of axially loaded piles. This technique is used to assess the bearing capacity and structural integrity of piles both during installation and upon restriking after a resting period.

How is PDA Measurement Conducted?

The study consists of several key stages that ensure reliable and accurate measurement results. The tests are conducted using advanced equipment that records stress waves generated during the impact on the pile head.

Preparation

  • Before the measurement, an inspection of the piles is carried out to ensure a free and undamaged pile top.
  • The pile must extend sufficiently above ground level to allow for proper measurement.
  • Measurement

  • Strain transducers and accelerometers are mounted symmetrically on the pile.
  • The drop hammer of the piling rig is positioned on the pile top, and 3-10 blows with an appropriate drop height are performed.
  • Signals are collected and calibrated in an analysis computer, which records force and velocity in real time.
  • Measurement Methods

    PDA Measurement during driving:

  • Measurements are continuously performed while the pile is being driven to assess its bearing capacity during installation.
  • Provides an immediate overview of the response of the pile and soil to the hammer impact.
  • PDA Measurement upon restriking:
  • The pile is retested after a resting period of at least 3 days.
  • Used to determine long-term bearing capacity, as piles often gain additional capacity over time, especially in cohesive soils.
  • Hammer efficiency test:
  • The hammer is tested on a pile with suitable resistance to ensure correct energy transfer.
  • The test verifies that the piling equipment delivers the required force to mobilize the pile’s full bearing capacity.

    Reliable bearing capacity assessment

PDA measurements provide an accurate determination of the pile’s bearing capacity under both compressive and tensile loads.

Effective quality control and early damage detection

The method detects cracks, defects, or changes in the cross-section of the pile.

    Optimization of pile design –

The collected data can help improve pile design and ensure proper installation.

    Possibility for follow-up testing –

Restriking tests provide better information about the long-term bearing capacity of the pile.

    Direct measurement without assumptions

Since PDA measurements are performed directly on the pile, uncertainties associated with theoretical calculations of hammer efficiency are avoided.
